Lawrence County Teen Court is a c 3 non-profit. This program exists solely on community support, grants, fund-raising and donations. We would appreciate your consideration. Any amount is appreciated AND tax deductible. To date, there are 12 active teen courts in the State of South Dakota, at least one in each judicial circuit. Court is conducted in the Lawrence County Courthouse on the first and third Monday nights of the month. I have been a supporter of the program for many years.

Members of the Teen Court e. They work to create a legal and binding sentence for the defendant based on the following principles of Restorative Justice:. Definitions: The data include a list of charges referred to the teen court programs across the state by offense, the number of cases heard and the number of cases completed or returned. Note: a defendant may have had more than one charge so the number of charges referred does not equate to the number of cases heard if the defendant handled more than one charge in a case. Also, the number of returned and heard cases do not reflect cases that were in progress heard but not completed in a year so there is a discrepancy in the number of cases and dispositions. Updated: March 5, am. Lawrence County Teen Court won the state mock trial competition in Pierre, bringing back the title to the Black Hills for the second year in a row. Courtesy photo. For the 17 teens that participated in the competition, they have completed a total of 1, hours to the Lawrence County Teen Court program. That speaks volumes for these young individuals that also excel in their respective schools. The competition showcased the talents of the volunteers of Teen Court programs from across the state and highlighted the principles of restorative justice that guide the peer-to-peer program. Each program competing in the competition was judged in three rounds of competition, and each round presented the teams with a different fact pattern and defendant. The teams were judged on how well they addressed the offense by the defendant and determined a constructive sentence to address the harm to the community and help the defendant understand the consequences of his actions. Individuals acting as defense attorneys, prosecution attorneys, and bailiffs were judged on their roles on the process in achieving the goals of the team. Log In.
